NEMO Studio Bits

NEMO Studio Bits
Amsterdam 2002

An new section for information technology in the museum of science NEMO in Amsterdam. The narrow three storey construction is designed as a meccano-box to respond to future changes in a flexible way. The orange colour makes a clear distinction between this new structure and the existing architecture of Renzo Piano, the designer of the museum, who had to agree with this new intervention.
The first floor of the building has an open floorplan. Here is the so called Studio Bits en Co located that offers kids the use of multi media possibilities after their visit of the museum. The top floor has two lecture rooms that are enclosed by layered glass partitions.
All parts of this construction are clearly legible. Nothing is hidden. The steel construction, the glass envelope, the data communication network, the airconditioning pipes, everything in this design is treated as a different and independent layer. The box of bricks principle is emphasized by painting the construction codes copied from the technical drawings on each post and beam. This project is done in collaboration with Kossmann en de Jong exhibition architects.
